Trophy Flowers

The Aztecs called Marigolds “cempasúchil”, or “the flower of twenty petals.” Legend tells of two
lovers, Xóchitl and Huitzilin, who prayed to the Sun God for their bond to last beyond death.
When Huitzilin died in battle, Xóchitl begged the Sun to reunite them. The god transformed her
into a marigold, and when a hummingbird (her lover’s spirit) touched the petals, the marigold
bloom opened.
